283 Not On My Watch

(Jane’s PoV)

“What can you do to me? I didn’t come with my body, there’s no reason for him to be jealous. Unless, you purposely leave the crucial detail from him.”

Sanji chuckled. He might do that, after all, teasing Tom was always fun for him. As the one who had been holding the neutral force, I couldn’t side with one of them.

It was a good thing that he didn’t talk about it further.

“So, what happened out there? I heard someone shouted ghost just now.”

So, I told him what had happened briefly. As expected, his reaction was similar to those astral beings outside when I explained to them the reason I took the matter into my hand to scare the poor couple away. He was stunned and I could only scratch the non existent itch on my face while turning my face away from him awkwardly. Was it that bad?

“Jane, I have never thought of you using your power to scare fellow humans. You even went as far as pretending to be a ghost! How bored are you, actually? Why don’t you just release your power like usual instead of holding it in so that you won’t be bored? Surely, you will have more to watch than usual if you do it.”

“If I release my power, the ghosts will stay away from me and only those of high ranks will have a courage to provoke me. Only when I hide my power then those troublesome creatures won’t come and find trouble with me. It will be safer for everyone.” I tried to reason with him. Of course, I didn’t tell him that the high rank ones were rare to be seen unless it was under special condition such as the weakening of the borderline or I was nearby a portal or special places which contained high level of negativity. Or, the high rank devils were bored so they went to the human worlds for a ‘patrol’.

Sanji squinted his eyes at me, peering to my eyes as if he didn’t believe with what I had just said to him. “Fine. But, have you thought about the consequences after scaring them like that?”

.....

“I know. Their fear is going to attract the other beings and there is a possibility that some of the people here are going to be possessed. Don’t worry. They won’t dare to approach this camp site now that they know I’m here.” I nodded.

“Are you sure?”

I nodded again. “I’ve left my trace here and there, so I’m sure about it. It’s not much, but it is enough to repel the low rank ones until morning.”

“You’ve thought about it well. Well done.” Sanji smiled warmly at me and I could only hide the guilty conscience I had inside.

Actually, I didn’t think that far. I did leave some traces of my power here and there before I found his tent, but I honestly didn’t consider the possibility of those two might bring fear into the hearts of the others in the camp site. Now that he asked about it, I suddenly had the need to return to the girls’ camp to make sure everything was okay.

“I need to return to my tent. Sorry for waking you up. Also, you might want to be on guard, just in case my aura isn’t enough to scare them off.” I told him before floating passed the tent and towards my own tent.

I ignored the chaos those two created and hastily returned to the girls side only to find that there were wicked auras approaching from the other side of the forest towards the girls’ camp area. Some of the girls were shaking in fear when they heard the exaggerating story from the others.

These creatures smelled their fear so they came to join in the fun.

Not on my watch, though. I flashed towards the nearest tent to the forest area and, this time, seriously putting on a barrier around the site. The auras were different with the others that I met before. I wondered what made them different?

Only after I finished putting on a barrier around the whole camping area, then I returned to my tent. The girls in my tent were sleeping soundly, thanks to the barrier I put around the tent. It didn’t only protect them from negative auras, but it also helped them to feel relax. Unless it was something life-threatening, they wouldn’t wake up easily.

I returned to my body and slept through the night without any care about the commotion outside. When I woke up in the morning, I found that I was the only one inside the tent. Apparently, the other three woke up early and were listening to what happened at night before from the others.

“I can’t believe you slept through it. Were you sleeping or passing out? It was a big commotion yet you were all sleeping like a log.” I heard someone was half-scolding my teammates.

Who did she think she was to scold people like that?

“Did someone get possessed? I don’t see any reason for us to care for something unimportant like that unless someone got possessed and attacked the others.” Daisy’s calm voice was heard through the slightly open door.

“There’s no such thing, but you should at least wake up to help the others.”

“Since everything’s fine, why are you barking here in the morning? I’ll wake up later if you’re the one got possessed.” Daisy started to sound irritated. “Just remember, I’m not gentle towards possessed person. Now, scram!”

Even without seeing her expression I knew that she was smiling menacingly. As expected of our Goddess!

I walked out of the tent, feeling that it was enough for me for eavesdropping the girls’ fight. Daisy, Yuni, and Alivia were sitting in front of the tent casually while there were two girls standing in front of them, looking agitated.

Those two must have noticed my arrival. Their sharp gaze turned towards me as if they wanted to intimidate me with their glare. Did they think I would be intimidated by their gazes? I had passed that point in life where I would feel fear from a gaze alone.

Instead, I remembered Sanji once told me that if I didn’t control my gaze properly, I would look like I could actually threaten someone, especially my cold stare. It was a promise of terrifying death for the one I was staring at. He even said that it might be because of my experience in facing death during my battle with shamans, shadows, and everything.

I’d say he was exaggerating. I had looked up in the mirror and I thought that I looked exactly the same with the me before. I admitted that sometimes I might look psychotic or even cold, but it wasn’t to the point that I would look terrifying.

So, this kind of gaze baffled me. I blinked my eyes innocently at them, showing a clueless look on my face as to why they would be so pissed off.

“Another dumb lazy b*tch acting like she doesn’t need a boy when she actually depends on them so much that she could sleep like a f*cking log.” She muttered loud enough for me to hear.

Excuse me? What was that? Why couldn’t I understand a word she was saying? Where did that hatred come from? It was still early in the morning, why would these girls come provoking us? My brain felt like it was being electrocuted from how vulgar those words were. Somehow, I felt like I needed to show them how to clean their mouths properly for saying bad things to other people.

“Hey, watch your words!” Yuni hissed furiously. She stood up and faced them with a glare.

“Y-yes! That’s not ni-nice of you for saying things to other people!” The shy Alivia joined in even though she still looked timid towards people other than us.

Of course, I wasn’t the one who would take any form of insult well. Before I knew it, my expression had turned cold. “Bad mouthing people can be very dangerous.” I said icily.

Honestly, I could just do something to her right at this moment, but what was the difference between the shamans and me? So, even though I was annoyed, I couldn’t do anything to her at this moment. Not that I couldn’t do anything to her later, it was just not the right time.

Then, I noticed the change in their expressions. Their arrogance disappeared, leaving only a trace of fear and intimidation on their faces. They stepped back and I noticed their steps faltered a bit. So, I stepped forward, not having an ounce of wanting to intimidate them. It just felt right. But, Daisy didn’t let me.

She got up from her seat and stood up between me and them. I didn’t know what kind of expression she had on her face, but I heard a baffling sentence coming from her mouth.

“I’m saving you both. Now scram!”
