Xavier’s voice was loud, so both Winnie and Christopher heard him.

Christopher tactfully kept quiet and gave Winnie a signal, asking her to take the call. He

then turned around thoughtfully to give her privacy.

Winnie fished out the phone from her pocket and put it next to her ear.

“Hi, Xavier. I’m fine. It’s Captain Bennett, the one from the Narcotics Enforcement

Department. I’ve spoken to you about him previously, remember? I have something to

discuss with him now, so I’ll chat with you again later.”

Immediately, without giving Xavier a chance to respond, she ended the call.

Actually, Winnie wasn’t the one who was in a hurry to hang up. Her phone battery was low

and happened to die on her at that moment.

“I’m ready, Captain Bennett.” Winnie kept her phone and called out to Christopher.

Christopher turned around, handed her the wig, and asked, “May I ask what you were

doing just now?”

Winnie frowned slightly and said, “Nothing much. I was merely trying to scare her. The

woman you saw just now, the one crouching on the ground, was my arch-enemy.”

“I saw she was quite badly injured. You… Did you do that to her?” Christopher frowned and

asked.

“How is that possible?” Winnie gave him a wry smile and added, “I have nothing to do with

those injuries. Her husband did that to her! I’m sure you know for every action, there’s an

equal and opposite reaction, Captain Bennett. If I hit her, I will hurt my own hand as well. I

wouldn’t want to lay a hand on her and dirty my own hands!”

“I…” Christopher stared intently at her, and for a moment, he was at a loss for words.

After he composed himself, he said, “Still, you shouldn’t have resorted to such sneaky

acts. In the event something goes wrong, you’ll find yourself on the wrong side of the law.”

Winnie suddenly broke out into laughter upon hearing that.

She was a natural beauty, and when she laughed, no men could resist her charm.

Christopher was no exception.

As she laughed, she even raised her arms and stretched out both fists right in front of

Christopher’s face. “So, are you going to arrest me now, Captain Bennett?” she asked.

Christopher looked down and rested his gaze on her fair and slender wrists. He would

never bear to handcuff those delicate hands of hers.

“I’m not going to arrest you. I’m just reminding you not to do such silly things in the

future,” he absent-mindedly said.

“Good. Let’s talk about that when the time comes! So I can leave now, right?” Winnie

swiftly retracted her hands and said.

“Where are you going?” Christopher asked.

“Home, of course.” She was in a lousy mood and wanted to head home and hibernate in

her room.

“Can I give you a lift? I reckon you didn’t drive here tonight. Moreover, I don’t want you

frightening the other passersby and drivers with that outfit of yours,” Christopher jokingly

said.

Winnie graciously accepted his offer and said, “Thank you, Captain Bennett. Let’s go

then.”

She was about to walk out of the alley when she noticed Christopher was still rooted to his

spot.

“What’s wrong?” she asked, puzzled.

“My colleague called an ambulance, and he’s waiting out there. Why don’t you go the

other way instead? I’ll pick you up at the other end of the alley,” he suggested.

Winnie’s mind went blank for a second, then she quickly recognized what was happening.

He didn’t want his colleagues to see him helping a “fugitive” escape.

She couldn’t help but chuckle as she teasingly asked, “Do you do this often?”

Christopher didn’t get what she meant, and for a moment, he thought she saw through

him and was aware of his feelings for her.

He frowned and asked uneasily, “What do you mean? Do what often?”

“Help a suspect escape!” Winnie smiled as she added, “I heard from Lucas that you are

one of the most righteous officers though.”

“Oh, you’re talking about this? You said you’re not the one who injured her, didn’t you?

Anyway, I’ll go get my car, so wait for me.” Christopher smiled and scratched his head

awkwardly.

He could feel his heart pounding fast as he turned to walk away. However, a couple of

seconds later, he abruptly turned back, removed his jacket, and draped it over Winnie’s

shoulders.

“It’s cold out here, so take this. Otherwise, you’ll catch a cold,” he said.

It was only when he mentioned the cold that Winnie realized it was indeed chilly.

She nodded gratefully and said, “Thank you.”

When Christopher headed back, his colleague was still anxiously waiting for the

ambulance.

When his colleague saw him walk back, he ran up to him and asked, “Well? Did you

manage to catch the suspect, Chris?”

Christopher took his phone out and fiddled with it, acting as if he needed to attend to

something really urgent.

Then, he frowned and replied, “No, I lost the suspect. I have an emergency at home, so I

need to go now. Please stay here to settle the case.”

“Sure, no problem!”

Christopher had always been upright, so his teammate never suspected a thing.

It was only after he drove off that his colleague realized something was amiss.

Chris is single and he’s not staying with his parents. What emergency can he have at

home?

In the meantime, Christopher had already picked Winnie up and left the place.

Just as Winnie sat down in the passenger seat, her stomach growled. The noise was

exceptionally loud and clear in the confines of the car, and she soon blushed with

embarrassment.

“Erm… Can I buy you supper? Shall we see if there are any eateries around here?” Winnie

asked.

Christopher had already heard her stomach rumbles and was about to suggest treating

her to supper, but she beat him to it.

He wound down the window, glanced around, and saw there were some street vendors

selling food along the road. However, he remembered the incident when they last ate

together near the hospital, so he frowned and said, “There are, but it might not be

sanitary enough for you. What would you like to eat?”

“Anything will do. A simple pasta will be fine. I’m not picky when I’m hungry,” Winnie said.

“Then… how about going to my place? It’s just around the corner. I can prepare a simple

meal for you.” Christopher looked straight ahead and pretended to be nonchalant when

making that offer.

“Sure, if that’s okay with you.” Winnie agreed readily. After all, she had always been an

easygoing person.

“Not a problem for me. I’m single and I stay by myself,” he replied, consciously avoiding

eye contact with Winnie.

Soon, Winnie found herself seated at the dining table in Christopher’s home.

His place wasn’t big, but the interior was tastefully decorated.

Lucas had mentioned previously that Christopher appeared to be just a lowly paid police

officer, but he actually came from a well-to-do family. He aspired to be a police officer

because he wanted to make a real difference in society.

When the other rich scions were busy partying and showing off their wealth, he was busy

practicing his shooting skills and going after drug cartels.

Winnie was more than happy to have him as a friend, as she admired his righteousness

and noble aspirations.

The two hit it off and had a pleasant chat over supper.

After supper, Winnie was getting ready to hail a cab to go home, but Christopher insisted

on sending her home.

Winnie repeatedly declined his offer but he was insistent, so she finally gave in and

accepted his kind offer.

In less than half an hour, they reached the residential area of Aqua Moana.

Christopher chivalrously got out and opened the car door for Winnie when they arrived.

None of them noticed that a black Mercedes-Benz with an Avenport license plate of 11111

was parked a short distance from them.

Avenport license plates with numbers such as 11111, 66666, or 88888 came with a

ridiculously high price.

A person without connections with the authorities could not dream of owning such a

license plate even if he or she had the cash to throw around.

Such unique license plates were a sign of social status in Avenport, and the Fairchild family

owned all ten number plates from 00000 to 99999.

Six of those license plates belonged to Xavier.

Unbeknownst to Winnie and Christopher, a pair of eyes was staring intently at them from

inside the car, monitoring their every move.
